School districts across California are beginning to ask the same question:

Do we need a Facility Master Plan right now?

We created the infographic below outlining the timeline, requirements, and next steps for districts.

The biggest takeaway: Most districts still have time

For most districts, a Facility Master Plan is not required immediately. The timing depends on the specific funding program and application status. In many cases, districts may have up to 90 days after an application begins processing or up to 18 months after funding is released to submit a compliant plan.

Applications submitted on or after May 5, 2027, however, will require a Facility Master Plan at the time of submission. Until then, districts have an opportunity to plan strategically and prepare for future compliance requirements.

What districts should do now

Even though the requirement is not immediate, this is the ideal time for districts to:

  • Review existing facilities planning documents
  • Identify gaps in data or reporting
  • Evaluate deferred maintenance needs
  • Begin aligning facilities planning with broader district goals
  • Develop a roadmap for a compliant Facility Master Plan

Starting early allows districts to approach the process thoughtfully and strategically instead of reactively.
